Cephalopods are common in Chilean waters; however, there is little information on the distribution and abundance of their early life stages. In the austral spring seasons of 2008 and 2009 zooplankton samples were collected during two oceanographic cruises (CIMAR 14, CIMAR 15) in Patagonian fjords and channels of southern Chile between 46°S and 53°S.

Cephalopods have been among the dominant large predators in the ocean at various times in geological history. Two groups of cephalopods exist today: The Nautiloidea with a few species of the pearly nautilus, and the Coleoidea, containing the squids, cuttlefishes, octopods and vampire squids, which is represented by about 700 species.

Introduction. Cephalopods in the bathyal and abyssal ecosystems have been the subject of only a limited number of studies due to the obvious difficulties involved in collecting them adequately at such great depths (Voss 1967; Villanueva 1992).A further drawback relates to their delicate bodies, which are frequently damaged almost beyond recognition in trawl samples.

Squids are poorly adapted to the laboratory setting because of their size, fragility and general activity (Hanlon, 1987) and there is no simple way to study their organismic biology. At present, their natural history results from an assembly of fragmentary sources including chance observations in the field and laboratory determinations at the physiological or cellular level (Boyle, 1987 ...

Abstract. Questions of morphological study addressing living and fossil organisms are briefly discussed. The importance of ontogenetic patterns and processes in evolutionary biology are viewed on the background of three special problems of cephalopod morphology: the reproductive system of octopods, the lower beaks of coleoids and ammonites, and the arm crown of the coleoids.

Most cephalopods rely on vision to detect predators and prey, and to communicate with one another. Consequently, cephalopod vision is acute: training experiments have shown that the common octopus can distinguish the brightness, size, shape, and horizontal or vertical orientation of objects. The morphological construction gives cephalopod eyes the same performance as sharks'; however, their ...
